At Yun Boutique we have a very special tradition. Every winter, our families watch Shen Yun perform at Lincoln Center in New York. And every time, it overwhelms the senses.
For those who hadn’t heard of it, Shen Yun is a classical Chinese dance and orchestra company based out of New York. Each year it puts on a brand new performance showcasing myths and legends from 5,000 years of Chinese culture.
Military heroes, elegant court ladies, and fantastical vistas come to life on stage in a flurry of colors and evocative dance movements.
For me, seeing this performance is like an out-of-body experience. The East-meets-West-style orchestra fills the theater and seems to penetrate every cell of my body. Even the opening number gives me chills. And it never fails to, year after year.
From the standpoint of a jewelry designer (or any kind of creative, really), the icing on the proverbial cake is the visual delight. The performance is organized as a series of vignettes, so every time the curtain rises, the audience is transported to a different dynasty, royal court, or heavenly kingdom.
It’s worth seeing Shen Yun for the costuming alone. The color combinations of those flowing Chinese gowns are so fresh and unexpected. For months afterwards I continue to imagine the jewelry the women would have worn in those opulent palaces of yore.
In fact, our Dancing Above the Clouds earring design was inspired by the amethyst tones in Shen Yun’s 2013 theme.
So you know where we’ll be when Shen Yun returns to New York City Jan. 14–17 and March 2–13. Shen Yun tours over 150 cities worldwide.
We can’t wait to be inspired all over again, and we hope you can join in the fun too!
