設計背後：九色鹿
“很久以前，有一位化作鹿的神靈。他是一頭美麗的生物，一身九種顏色的毛髮閃閃發光，雄偉的鹿角閃耀著潔白的光芒，晶瑩如玉。他被稱為九色鹿。”
李桂山譯《壁畫與寓言：敦煌莫高窟壁畫故事》中的九色鹿傳說由此開始。
故事繼續，九色鹿在河邊吃草，突然聽到一個人被湍急的河水沖向下游的絕望呼喊：“天上的神，地上的神，快來救救我吧！”
鹿跳入冰冷的河水，救下落水者，落水者感激地依偎在他的背上。當他們到達河岸時，這個人說出他的名字叫條大，並承諾會忠實地侍奉這只鹿，直到他生命的盡頭。然而，鹿親切地對他說：“你可以回家了。只要向我保證——你永遠不會告訴任何人你在河邊遇見我”。條達答應了，謝天謝地回家了。
一夜，貴妃病重。她夢見了一隻九色鹿，一想到這樣的皮膚就能擁有一件美麗迷人的斗篷，她就著迷了。對鹿皮的貪婪吞噬了她，使她生病了。當國王被告知她生病的原因時，他發布了皇家公告，懸賞任何能幫助捕獲九色鹿的人。
條大聽說要發大財，急忙進宮禀告大王。他完全放棄了他的諾言，帶領國王和他的士兵來到了他的生命被拯救的確切地方，他們在那裡找到了九色鹿。
當國王的人準備射箭時，鹿突然跳上前來對國王說：“在我死之前，我只有一個願望。要知道，臣下刁大是漢奸騙子。他違背了永不透露我行踪的諾言。這樣的人會給你的王國帶來恥辱。”
國王真的很感動，並命令他的士兵放下弓箭。他將條大逐出國門，放了九彩鹿。從那時起，所有的鹿都受到保護，尤其是九色鹿。
